Bert Trautmann is a Manchester City and FA Cup hero.

Trautmann who arrived in England as German prisoner of war, refused an offer of repatriation, following his release in 1948, he settled in Lancashire as a farm worker, combining this by playing goalkeeper for St Helens town.

Performances for St Helens town gained Trautmann a reputation as a fantastic goalkeeper, so much so that first division side Manchester City signed him.

Trautmann's heroic performances in goal gained him acceptance with the football fans across the county, he was honoured with the FAW 1956 footballer of the year award.

Despite this it was his performance in the 1956 FA Cup final which made sure he would be remembered as one of the greatest goalkeepers ever.

Despite suffering a potentially life threatening broken neck and being knocked unconscious in the 75th minute, Trautmann played on, making several fine saves, ensuring Manchester City won 3-1. An act of bravery which will be remembered for ever.
